(WWLP) - Woody Allen is still as funny as ever. His more mature sense of humor now has a sharper edge in the delightfully amusing "To Rome With Love”.
Woody's a bundle of nerves giving the eternal city a taste of his famous insecurity.
We get to see the sights of Rome and share Woody's Insights into the foibles of love, young and old. And what a cast he's assembled. Alec Baldwin is something of a Woody Allen stand-in. He warns love sick Jesse Eisenberg to resist his potentially dangerous romantic inclinations towards his girlfriend's best friend.
Woody lets loose his pet peeve about the media making celebrities out of nobodies for no apparent reason. Penelope Cruz just about steals the picture as a woman of the world who complicated the life of a naïve newlywed. But most of all it's Woody's cynical view of the world that keeps the comedy in high gear.
To me the picture should have been called "To Woody Allen With Love". His genius is still as blazingly bright as ever, even If "To Rome With Love" is far from being his funniest film, but still funny enough for a sparkling 3 stars. You can believe me when I tell you, I can't wait for the next Woody Allen movie.
