Your Bird and West Nile Virus

The Crystal Parrot - West Nile Virus is a viral disease that can cause infection of the brain and spinal cord. It is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. If your bird contracts the virus, he will become sick very quickly or you might find him dead for no apparent reason! There is no treatment for the virus itself. The symptoms can be treated with hope that your bird will recover, but there is no guarantee that he will regain his normal health or even live for very long.

Prevention is the best medicine and there are many things that you can do to prevent your bird from becoming infected. Make sure all your screens and windows are sealed properly and when coming in and out of your house and when coming in or out, do so quickly!  We do not recommend taking your bird outside and taking a chance with this deadly virus. Never use any type of mosquito repellant on or around your bird! These can be as deadly as West Nile! Be aware that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “ultrasonic” products are ineffective in preventing mosquito bites.

Keep in mind that if you have neighbors who use sprays or foggers in their yards, these could adversely affect your bird as well. If you know that they are being used, shut all doors and windows until the chemicals have dissipated, for at least 24 hours!

Even if you do not have your bird outside, you still want to limit the mosquito population by eliminating or emptying all water holding containers and items from your property. Flower pots, children’s wading pools, even garden tools such as wheelbarrows should all be empty of any water! Being diligent will improve the chances of mosquitoes not entering your home!
