SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Monday is Breast Cancer Awareness Day here at 22News, and new research shows a simple hormone blood test could reveal a woman's risk for breast cancer.
A recent study showed that women with high levels of the hormones testosterone, estradiol, and DHEAS had up to a 107% greater chance of developing breast cancer.
Dr. James Stewart of Baystate Medical Center says that the research is still new, and those at risk should be cautiously optimistic.
“There is no blood test today that can diagnose breast cancer. There is no perfect pattern of hormones that can tell people what to do,” said Stewart, who is the hospital’s Chief of Hematology/Oncology.
“In the long run, if you are going to have a combination of blood tests, it has to be accurate, it has to be information that will tell you what to do. So even if certain hormones are high, what do you do with the information?”
Dr. Stewart says the standard test for detecting breast cancer is still the mammogram.
