After the holidays, I am taking steps to lose weight. Is it better for me to eat low fat or low carb?
Kim, Internet

With all the conflicting information out there it is hard to know if you should snack on low carb peanuts or low fat pretzels. Now we have the answers.

Listen up because this is one of the most exciting news stories in my 26 years on the news. Some people lose more weight eating low carb and some people lose more weight eating low fat. It depends on your specific genes. And the big news is that now, science has identified 4 genes that effect your weight and we can do a simple mouth swab to look at those genes and tell you the best way for you to lose weight.

Studies at Stanford University looked at people who followed the Atkins low carb diet, Dean Ornish's low fat diet, the Zone Diet, and the LEARN program. They found the best diet varied person to person depending on their genes. When you eat according to what your genes tell you, you lose 2 to 3 times more weight than following a plan that is not matched to your genes.

I'm at an age where it is harder manage my weight. For 20 years I've exercised an hour a day, counted 1800 calories, and maintained my weight. After my gene test I still exercise an hour a day, count 1800 calories a day, but my genes said I had to eat more fat and I'm down 8 pounds.

So we're offering the gene test at all my offices now because patients should see 2-3 times better weight loss.

If you're home the Monday after Christmas, December 27th, tune into Mass Appeal at 11 AM to learn more. The test costs only $169. You'd pay more going to group meeting for weeks, having surgery, or having pre-packaged meals sent to you and still not be sure you are on the most effective plan for your body.
