Sweetener doesn't shut down brain's hunger signals

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The type sugar that you consume could possibly cause you to overeat.

A new study out of Yale University found that fructose sugars do not shut down the brain's hunger signals.

Scientists say that these results don't necessarily prove that fructose actually causes obesity, but the percentage of overweight Americans has skyrocketed alongside the increased consumption of the sweetener.

Many argue that fructose is an ingredient that is hard to avoid these days.

“It kind of crops up in just about everything that you eat, whether it's in a salad dressing or in a product that is a snack item,” Jeanne Dowd of Hampden said.

Experts say that if you want to focus on losing weight in the New Year, focus on reading the labels rather than picking up the latest diet book.
