(NBC) - They call it "clam shell" or "oyster shell" packaging. The heavy plastic that completely seals what you're buying.

Many customers complain that packages in plastic can be hard to open. Not only are they hard to open, but they may be a lot more dangerous than consumers think.

Computer technician Andrew Tyner tried to open a new flash drive wrapped in the hard plastic.

"When i tried to open the package, the scissors weren't strong enough to cut through it. So I looked around and the closest thing I found was a carpenter's knife." Andrew Tyner, Computer Specialist said.

Turns out that was a mistake. Andrew wound up cutting himself, and his injury is hardly unique.

One doctor's group says six thousand people a year are injured trying to open clamshell packages.

Scott Gordon reports on this dangerous obstacle consumers may face in this internet health video report.
