(NBC) - Horse owners in Nova Scotia, Canada are getting very nervous. The province has its first confirmed case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and a second case is suspected.

People can get the disease too, but the risk is considered small.

Veterinarian Brian Manuel is keeping a close eye on the horses on his farm; now that a deadly infectious disease has appeared for the first time there.

In the last two weeks, Manuel has seen three animals so sick, they had to be euthanized.

"very disturbing, because the horses are very stressed at this time, pain, like colic." Dr. Brian Manuel from the Nova Veterinary Clinic said.

The disease causes swelling of the brain. The virus is found in infected birds and spread through mosquito bites.
So far this season, it's killed six horses in maine.

As Elizabeth Chiu reports in this internet video health report, vaccination clinics for horses are planned.
