Safe swimming

MCALLEN, Tex. (KVEO) - Jonathan Garza is in the process of teaching his daughter Elena about the water.

"It's just her confidence of not being scared to jump in and swim around," said Garza.

Today the pair are taking a class with other toddlers at Aqua Tots in McAllen, Texas.

The swim instructor's here said starting children in water early helps their confidence.

"We start our classes with six months old so that when they are young, they learn that the water is not an evil monster, so that they don't have any traumatic events," said instructor Laura De Leon.

Instructors said they try to teach all kids to respect the water. And this respect begins with being comfortable with basic water skills.
