CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - Traditional barbeque items can be higher in calories, which are fine in moderation as a treat, but with a few tips you can help slash the calories, while keeping all the flavor.
Michelle Mattia, a register dietitian at ShopRite of Enfield, Connecticut, gave us some tips for healthy summer eating.
Summer is grilling season!
Families are more interested in spending time outdoors rather than heating up the kitchen.
Enjoy seasonal produce
Load up on a rainbow of color in the produce department and enjoy seasonal produce. Try seasonal produce such as tomatoes, summer squash, or eggplant, grilled, steamed or raw and use in salads, kebobs or on their own as a fresh summer side dish.
Re-invent traditional "salads"
Choose salads made with couscous, quinoa, brown rice, edamame or grilled veggies rather than mayo-based potato salads such as cole slaws and potato salads to increase fiber and nutrition.
Go lean with protein
Choose lean beef (90%+), turkey or bison for burgers, or try pork tenderloin, fish or chicken breast to make your own kebobs. Or go meatless and grill your own stuffed portabella mushrooms or your favorite tofu-based meat alternative.
Healthy dessert ideas
Aim for sliced melon, fruit salads or a fruit parfait instead of traditional baked desserts that you can enjoy year-round. Instead of ice cream treats, freeze your own pops in ice cube trays, paper/plastic cups, or popsicle molds.
Healthy Beverages
If water just won't quench your thirst, make your own juice spritzer with seltzer or club soda and a splash of fruit juice, or try your own sun tea. Garnish with berries, mint or citrus fruits.
