SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - The animals of Franklin County have long been served by the programs and services of Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society.
Elise Rice, Board Member with Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society tells you more.

From its beginnings as the Greenfield Area Animal Shelter in 1968 to the merge in 2006 between the Pioneer Valley Humane Society and Leverett’s Dakin Animal Shelter, tens of thousands of animals have been fostered, adopted, and spayed/neutered through compassionate sheltering.
In 2009, Dakin expanded its services into Hampden County with the purchase of the MSPCA’s adoption center/hospital building in Springfield when that organization ceased serving Western Massachusetts’ animals and people. However, the commitment to the Upper Valley of Franklin and Hampshire counties has remained strong.
Dakin’s pet food aid programs provide a safety net for those who might have to surrender their much loved pet were it not for the pet food bank. Our spay/neuter services are offered free of charge in grant-funded, targeted communities such as Greenfield, Turners Falls, and Orange. Wonderful companions await adoption in our Leverett adoption center.
Artist Tony Palumbo and restaurateur/chef Michael Collins, owners of the Green Emporium in Colrain, have been long-time friends to Dakin. Their adopted cats and dogs came to their family via Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society’s adoption center in Greenfield. Their pets also happen to be the subjects in many of Tony’s paintings.
On July 14, those paintings will be for sale to benefit Dakin at an event at The Arts Block in Greenfield. Mike will be coordinating a delicious variety of food donated by local restaurants including Brick Wall Burger, Eclectic Catering (Aaron Fides), Hope & Olive, Magpie, Taylor’s Tavern, and The Arts Block in Greenfield; Gypsy Apple Bistro, Shelburne Falls; Ristorante DiPaolo, Turners Falls; Blue Heron, Sunderland; Baker’s Oven and Mike & Tony’s Pizzeria of Colrain.
Sponsors for the event include People’s United Bank; Dillon Chevrolet; Gilmore & Skole Insurance Agency; Ryan and Casey Liquors; and Ed Wierzbowski, owner of The Arts Block, all of Greenfield; Mike & Tony’s Pizzeria, Colrain; and 25 Central, Northampton.
Food, music, and great art – it will be a wonderful evening to show support for the animals in your community. All proceeds benefit Dakin programs serving Franklin County.
