MONSON, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - The Juliet Rose gallery features a slice of New England and a spice of Jamaica and will open your eyes to a whole new world of art. To share more about their work are co-owners of the Juliet Rose Gallery and Studio Juliet Bacchas and Linda Spelko.
Juliette and I met about ten years ago, and we both had a love of art. We wanted to some day have a gallery, and we decided to join forces, and started our own gallery.
I'm from Jamaica, and when we started our business, we wanted to include a little bit of the spicy -- spiciness of Jamaica, with the local area that we actually have our business in, and that we would be supporting and giving services to. My work is predominantly inspired by the Jamaican landscape, the foliage, the water, the people. I knew it was in me. I couldn't do anything about that, so we had to combine Linda of New England, and Juliette from Jamaica. And itworks.
Juliette predominantly is a hand builder with techniques I use called African coiling. I learned it at a potter's studio in Jamaica, and it's little pieces of clay that is the size of my hand that is pressed against the other hand and twist. In other twist, though side of my finger will create a spiral feathery pattern which you can keep as a surface finish or you can smooth it down.
Linda predominantly works on the wheel. This is wonderful round shape is one of my favorite shapes. This particular piece is something that we call racoo. We bring the pot up to temperature to 1,800 degrees and we open up the kiln up outside, naturally, and take these out with tongs, and they burst in to flames, and that's why you get these variations of colors and coppers.
We have a raku workshop twice a year once in the spring, once in the fall. We put up a tent, and it's pot luck, and while the kiln is going, we eat good food, good conversation, and then we open the kiln. For these surprises. Attand the raku workshop May 21st, call for additional details.
