INDIAN ORCHARD, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - Finding new and creative uses for old items is certainly part of "green" living. Well, wait until you hear the story behind the "Bread Bag." Sue Cagan and Fran Nowak of Valley Vogue Collections give us the scoop.
we're middle school teachers and we have lots of lunch bags, wonder bread bags, bagel bags. What we do is we put the threads on the loom.
Weave
A long time ago I went out down south. They didn't have enough money to provide the weavers with fibers. So they used bread bags to weave on the looms. That's why we thought about using it when the green living came in. We decided to try it out.
We weave and do some high-end weaving which we take a recycled sari silk which the women in India go into the factories and soak up the silk off the floor and re-weave it. This is recycled sari silk. Kelp has tis sea weed and has the ability to absorb into the skin which cam help with arthritis.
An interesting thought that you put on our website about the differences in paper versus plastic in the grocery store.
"It takes seven trucks to deliver paper bags where one truck can transport the same amount of plastic bags."
We do shows at the Indian Orchard mills and Mattoon Street in South Hadley at Arts Unlimited. People can call us for an appointment.
