AMHERST, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - We all want our children to have self confidence, but how can we instill it in them?

Clinical Psychologist Tim Hope
shared some tips on how to build your child's self confidence.

Building your child's self confidence

  • Learn about what your child is interested in--play the "child's game"

  • Observe what your child has mastered, what they can do with help, and what they have not learned yet

  • Give your child opportunities to learn by doing things for themselves

  • Let them work a little bit at a problem

  • Encourage them to try and persist in the face of challenge

  • Encourage them to think about alternative solutions

  • Encourage them to ask someone for help

  • Help your child learn from mistakes or outcomes that they did not expect

  • Expose your child to variety of thinking physical musical taste artistic and expressive opportunities

  • Your child is constantly growing so don't be surprised if the third time you offer that salmon burger or to go for a run or to read that book your child says, "sure!"

  • Mastery comes through repetition

  • Self confidence comes through success

  • Self esteem comes from self respect
