AMHERST, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - We all know that kids can be a little bit rambunctious, but it's important to know when activity moves to hyperactivity.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Tim Hope shared some tips on how to manage hyper activity in our kids.
What is hyperactivity?
Hyperactivity is part of a condition called "Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder." In young children, the range of what is "normal" activity levels is quite wide. Hyperactivity includes high energy levels, impulsive behaviors, as well as distractibility and inattention. There can be emotional and other behavioral symptoms, as well, including irritability and oppositional and defiant behavior.
A good evaluation by your child's pediatrician and psychologist would involve rating behaviors seen at home, in the community, and at school.
Treatment options include behavior therapy, medication, and parent education.
