CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - Many British people enjoy crumpets with tea on a daily basis! So our very own Mass Appeal Producer Michelle showed us how to make these delicious tea time treats!

English Crumpets

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Cups Milk
  • 1 1/2 Tsp Sugar
  • 7 G 1/4 oz package dried instant yeast
  • 3 Cups flour
  • 1/2 Tsp baking soda
  • 6 1/2 oz Water
  • Pinch of salt

Directions:

  1. Pour the milk into a saucepan and heat until just warm. Transfer into a bowl and add the sugar and yeast. Allow to stand for 10 minutes or until the milk starts to bubble.
  2. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl and make a well in the center. Add the milk/yeast mixture to the flour and beat with an electric beater until completely smooth.
  3. Cover in plastic wrap and stand in a warm place for 1- 1 1/2 hours until doubled in volume and full of air bubbles.
  4. Mix the baking soda with the water and use your electric beater to combine this with the batter.
  5. Heat a heavy based frying pan or griddle over a medium heat and grease with a little butter.
  6. Grease your molds and place on the hot surface and place 2-3 tablespoons of mixture inside the mold. Your first 2-3 crumpets will be a little trial and error to get your desired thickness. Your mixture will rise in the molds.
  7. Once the surface is covered in broken bubbles and a light skin has formed you can remove your crumpet from the mold, turn gently and cook on the other side.
  8. Remove from the pan, top with your favorite topping and enjoy!

Crumpets are great used for either sweet or savory toppings.

Some of the more common toppings include:

  • Honey
  • Butter
  • Golden syrup
  • Jams
  • Nutella
