CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal) - If you're searching for a unique and delicious appetizer recipe for your next party why not make some fritters? Kristen Davis is the owner of Popcorn Noir and she's here to show us how to make some delicious spicy Indian fritters!

Onion Bhaji with Date Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium white onion
  • 1 medium red onion
  • 3-4 scallions
  • 1-2 tbsp Rice flour
  • 1-2 tbsp chickpea flour
  • 1 tsp Curry
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • Pinch Cardamom
  • Pinch Chili powder
  • Pinch Coriander
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Oil for frying

Date Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp Tamarind concentrate
  • ¼ cup White vinegar
  • ¼ cup Pitted dates
  • Water

Directions:

  1. Thinly slice onions to create matchstick like pieces. Toast spices and then process in a spice grinder. Toss your onions in spice mix, add flours and toss until everything is well coated.
  2. Add a small amount of water, mixing to create a batter. Continue to add water until a loose paste like consistency is created.
  3. Heat frying oil over medium high heat. Place a small handful of onion mix in the frying pan flattening to cook. Cook until golden brown on one side and then flip over. Continue cooking until golden brown on the second side.
  4. Remove and place on paper towels to soak up excess oil.
  5. While bhajis are cooking, in a food processor add dates and begin to process. Add a small amount of tamarind at a time and continue processing. When dates have broken down and are smooth, add the vinegar.
  6. Add small amount of water to thin out the sauce until desired consistency.
