ENFIELD, Conn. (WWLP) - With the state's sales tax free holiday on hold this year, many western Massachusetts people are snapping up savings in Connecticut. The state to our south is suspending the 6% sales tax on certain purchases all week.
Over the Connecticut line at stores like Bob's in Enfield, there were plenty of Massachusetts residents shopping sales tax-free.
One family from Wilbraham in back-to-school mode, was taking advantage of the 6% discount on shoes and clothes, that lasts all week. "I'd rather spend my money where it's a little cheaper and get more value for my dollar," said Jan Wegrzynek.
But If you don't feel like crossing the border to buy your shoes or clothes, just remember: in Massachusetts, all clothing purchases under $175 are tax free.
Traditionally, this was the weekend Massachusetts rolled back the sales tax, but not this year. It would have cost the Bay State roughly $15 million, in a time where money is tight on Beacon Hill.
"From two years ago we've lost $3.2 billion in revenue, that's the problem we're facing right now," explained Sen. Stephen Buoniconti.
Others argue, the state is still losing out. "I'm not on Beacon Hill and won't pretend to have the answers, but on the other hand when it's time to do our shopping, I go where I can get the best deal," said Gregory Jones of Longmeadow.
A deal for consumers that will cost cash-strapped Connecticut,
over $3 million.
