CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) - Charitable giving is big around the holidays but that also means more scams.

22News has some tips on how to give wisely.

Beware of telemarketers.

A report by the Attorney General's Office found that of every dollar a professional solicitor raised for a charity in 2009, only 43 cents went to the charity.

Do some research to find charities that support causes important to you.

Look online for local chapters and contact them directly to make sure the largest percentage of your donation goes directly to the cause.
