"Vegan" rumors at Smith College a hoax

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - What started as a logic lesson became a campus-wide controversy at Smith College recently.

Two professors convinced the school that it was going to go "vegan."

Every year, the professors who run Logic 101 come up with a fake controversy to spread on campus. They do this so their students have something to argue about in order to exercise their new logic skills.

This year, they had about 100 students spread a rumor that the school was going to become vegan and only buy locally grown food.

This rumor sparked both protests and rallies.

Some people loved the idea, while others hated it.

On Wednesday, the professors who run the class, Jay Garfield and Jim Henle, told 22News that this is exactly what they wanted to happen as it keeps the class fun.

"Students don't always take courses because they're good for them. It's like medicine that way. So we think the course should be fun and this is actually fun and this is something they can look forward to enjoy right around midterm time," Garfield said.

This isn't their first fake controversy.

In years past, they convinced the campus that the all womens colleges were going to fire all their male teaches.

Another year, they tried to convince students that Smith was going to merge with Mount Holyoke College.

It wasn't taken seriously at Smith but students at Mount Holyoke starting protesting.
