NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - While preventing mosquito bites has been getting a lot of attention lately, medical experts say you also need to watch out for ticks.

Unlike mosquitoes, where populations are most visible between dusk and dawn, ticks are around all the time.

Dr. Barry Elson told 22News hotspots for ticks are high grass and wet areas with undergrowth.

Ticks spread Lyme Disease and there are other dangers.

Dr. Elson says co-infections like babesiosis are becoming more common.

He says many physicians are not checking for these co-infections and that's a problem.

"Many physicians are still not checking for those co-infections and when you do test for the lyme organism you need to wait 14 days in order to show a positive result," Dr. Elson said.

Dr. Elson says there are a wide range of symptoms including chills, fever, and joint stiffness.

He says wearing long clothing and mosquito repellent could lessen your chances of being bit.
