HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - On Thursday, people in Holyoke took time for reflection in their lives. The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation.
Mayor Michael Sullivan and the Peace Initiative Committee held a
ceremony outside Holyoke City Hall. Speakers from several religious
denominations led the assembled group in prayers that asked for
help for the nation and the world's many problems.
While a call for a National Day of Prayer dates back to
George Washington, in 1952 it was created by a joint resolution of
the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry
S. Truman.
