People are still texting and driving

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - 22News is trying to save lives with its “X the TXT” awareness campaign to remind drivers not to text while they drive. Even though it's been illegal for almost a year, a lot of people are still texting behind the wheel.

This weekend's 22News interactive internet question has revealed that 63 percent of those who replied know someone who does text while they drive.

So we asked people here in western Massachusetts if they tell people to stop if they see them texting while driving.

Marissa Ronchi of Westfield said, “I think I would tell them definitely if they were texting and they shouldn't be driving and texting.”
“Texting and diving’s not a good thing, looking away for a couple of seconds could cost you your life and that's a decision you don't want to have anyone make,” said Lindsey Fenton of Westfield. “So I definitely see anyone whose texting and driving to stop doing that.”

Next month 22News will be distributing thumb bands as a visual reminder not to text behind the wheel.
