MADISON, Conn. (AP) - Madison officials say high levels of uranium have been found in the drinking water at two town schools, and they're shutting off water fountains and bringing in bottled water for drinking and cooking.
Tests at Kathleen Ryerson Elementary School and Dr. Robert
Brown Middle School showed the water had a uranium level that was
more than three times the acceptable limit set by the federal
government for public water systems that supply homes. There is no
such standard for schools.
Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive substance that
can cause kidney disease and other ailments.
State health officials say they do not expect anyone who
drank water at the schools to suffer any health problems.
Digging new wells or installing filters are some of the
options for fixing the problem
