PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for committing a string of bank and drug store robberies in Rhode Island.
U.S. District Court Judge Mary Lisi sentenced 32-year-old David Cahill on Friday to 63 months in prison. Federal prosecutors said Cahill would also have to pay more than $71,000 restitution.
Cahill, who is from Mendon, pleaded guilty in August to seven counts of robbery.
He stole oxycodone drugs at five drug stores and brandished a handgun at all but one store. At two banks, he handed tellers threatening notes and grabbed thousands in cash.
Defense attorney Mark Dana said Cahill had been addicted to the powerful painkiller he stole. He said Cahill accepted responsibility for his actions and apologized.
