13 year-old killed in Enfield house fire

ENFIELD, Conn. (WWLP) - 22News is following breaking news in Enfield, Connecticut where a 13 year-old girl was killed in a house fire.

The fire started at 11:26 p.m Wednesday at 50 Hassmar Road--which is in the Shaker Pines Section of the town. Firefighters received calls that there were 3 people trapped in the home. Two adults were able to escape, however the teen did not. She was trapped in her bedroom.

Shaker Pines Fire Chief Charles Mascata told 22News that when firefighters arrived, there were heavy flames coming out of the windows on the second floor and the roof was engulfed.

Mascata said all five fire companies in the town responded. They had a difficult time putting the fire out though, and several were injured. The porch of the home collapsed while five firefighters were on it; they fell down 10 feet. Three firefighters were injured as a result and taken to Baystate Medical Center, but they are expected to be okay.

The State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Neighbor Nelson Rodriguez told 22News that the girl's mother had done what she could to save her daughter.

“The mother tried, but the heat was just so intense that she couldn’t get upstairs. She tried, but she started burning her fingers, from what she tells me,” Rodriguez said.

“I really don’t have any words for how she really felt, it’s just devastating to see that to such a beautiful kid that she was. Well liked in the community, you know, very good in school. ”
