GROTON, Conn. (AP) - A Farmington-based company has won a contract to build a new $14.5 million commissary serving the Navy's submarine base in Connecticut.

KBE Building Corp. won the contract through a Defense Department bidding process.

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, a Democrat whose eastern Connecticut district includes the base in Groton, said Friday that the commissary will improve the base's infrastructure and the quality of life for people stationed there.

Elected officials in Connecticut have been pursuing state and federal investments to improve the sub base since it came near to being closed in a Pentagon base realignment process in 2005.

The state of Connecticut has committed $50 million for improvements to help increase the value of the base since then.
