CT considers overhaul of alcohol sale

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut's package stores are about to become the focus of state legislation rewriting how the liquor businesses are regulated.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he wants to update state liquor laws, some of which he says go back to Prohibition.

He's proposed removing price restrictions that require distributors to offer the same price to all retailers. He says that would give retailers more flexibility and reduce the retail price for consumers.

His plan also would establish a statewide licensing system using medallions that set a maximum number of permits.

Some package store owners oppose the governor's plan.

Mary Edgerton, the co-owner of a package store in Groton, says the new price structure proposal would favor big-box stores at the expense of small businesses.
