NEWTOWN, Conn. (WWLP) - Tens of thousands of luminaries were lit in Newtown Christmas Eve, to remember the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre.

People were asked to light the luminary bags at five o’clock Monday night.

A free distribution was held Sunday, with luminaries in packs of 26 to honor each of the Sandy Hook Elementary victims.

A total of 30-thousand bags and candles were handed out in Newtown and nearby Fairfield.

Volunteers said nearly everyone made a cash donation to the Newtown victims' fund as they were picking up the luminaries.

The luminaries were donated by a Fairfield business.
