HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) - Some players and the coach of the Quinnipiac University
volleyball team have filed a federal lawsuit against the university
over its decision to end its volleyball program.
The lawsuit alleges that the school has failed to provide
female students with equal opportunity to participate in varsity
intercollegiate athletics in violation of Title IX.
The complaint, submitted by the American Civil Liberties
Union of Connecticut, asserts that Quinnipiac has long offered male
students proportionately more opportunities than female students to
participate in varsity intercollegiate athletics.
The complaint asks the court to block the university from
cutting the program while the issue is litigated.
Quinnipiac declined to comment because the matter is in
litigation.
The team plays in the Northeast Conference.
It finished last season with a 5-30 record.
