Massachusetts laws ban opening on Thanksgiving Day

ENFIELD, Conn. (WWLP) - The stores will remain shut down in Massachusetts for all of Thanksgiving Day, but just over the state line in Connecticut, some stores will be open just as the turkey is coming off the table.

The anchor stores at Enfield Square are part of the new trend of Thanksgiving openings, with Sears opening at 8:00 P.M., Target opening at 9:00 P.M., and Macy’s opening at midnight. It’s being done around the country to allow shoppers to get a jump-start on the busiest shopping day of the year- Black Friday.

In recent years, many major stores began offering doorbuster deals at or after midnight, but now retailers have focused on getting stores open even earlier to get the shoppers in.

If you are one of those who will be shopping late Thursday night or early Friday morning, here are some tips:

  • Use your smartphones to compare prices
  • Bring any ads you saw about the product you want. That way, you can compare the advertised prices to actual prices in the store.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and bundle up. If you plan on lining up tonight, temperatures will dip into the 20's overnight.
  • Remember to keep your receipts

Massachusetts Blue Laws prohibit stores from opening on Thanksgiving Day itself, though many larger stores will be open shortly after Midnight.
