STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut officials say the first mosquitoes of the season to test positive for West Nile virus in the state have been trapped in Stamford.

The mosquitoes carrying the virus were trapped on June 27.

Public health officials say recent rain has created an ideal breeding habitat for mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus.

Officials say mosquitoes positive for West Nile virus were trapped last year in 30 municipalities. The Department of Public Health says nine Connecticut residents were identified last year with infection by the virus.
