ENFIELD, Conn. (WWLP) - If you still smell smoke in western Mass, get used to it. A fire at the town landfill in Enfield, Connecticut could burn through Friday morning.

Smoke can be smelled from Enfield all the way up to Holyoke.

A more than 100 foot high and 100 foot wide mulch and brush pile caught fire just before 12:30 Thursday morning.

Enfield Fire Deputy Paul Januscewski told 22News that the fire is under control, but could burn until they bring in heavy equipment to remove the top layer of debris.

Residents in Enfield are not able to drop off yard waste, but the town dump is open and garbage collection continues.

Januscewski says pressure from the pile caused heat to release into the air, which sparked the fire. Dry weather conditions contributed to it spreading.
