Red Sox, Conn. launch scholarship plates

HARTFORD (AP) - In a state divided by Boston and New York baseball fans, Connecticut officials are joining with the Red Sox to roll out a new license plate for college scholarships.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, a Yankees fan, put on a Red Sox jersey Friday at news conference with Red Sox executive vice president Sean Kennedy, who welcomed him "to Red Sox Nation." Malloy said he's glad to support "a wonderful cause" but he's not switching sides.

Sen. Chris Murphy, Congressmen Joe Courtney and John Larson, and several state officials joined in the lighthearted launch.

The plates, featuring the Red Sox hanging socks logo, will benefit Connecticut public school students.

They start at $115, with $65 going to the state's production costs, and $50 to the Red Sox Foundation. Four hundred applications are needed to start production.
