Report: Sandy Hook killer planned attack

(WTNH) - It's now two months after the Newtown tragedy, and State Police still have not officially released any motive for the terrible violence carried out by gunman Adam Lanza.

However, according to a published report, Lanza not only had planned the attack for years, but was trying to outdue the body count of other recent mass killers.

According to the report in the New York Daily News, investigators found a spreadsheet, seven feet long and four wide, put together by Lanza containing detailed information about recent mass shootings, including the names of 500 people killed and precise descriptions of the weapons used in the slaughters.

They say, he was essentially keeping a score of victims in places like Virginia Tech and Aurora, Colorado, hoping to someday put his name on top of the list of America's deadliest mass killer.

Daily News' columnist Mike Lupica says he got his information from a person he describes as a 'law enforcement veteran' in attendance at a recent meeting of police chiefs in Louisiana, that included a speech by Colonel Danny Stebbins of the Connecticut State Police.

The Daily News also reports that Lanza, a video game addict, had planned the attack for years and chose Sandy Hook Elementary because there were so many potential victims.

The report also says investigators have uncovered two-year-old photos of Lanza posing with weapons strapped to his body.

Monday, News 8 reached out to the State Police for a comment on the Daily News' report.

About the conference in New Orleans, the department said it dealt with "officer safety and public safety, along with lessons learned from the incident were discussed."

The statement went on to say, "it is unfortunate that someone in attendance chose not to honor Colonel Stebbins' request to respect the families right to know specifics of the investigation first." 

Officially, the State Police continues to say their final report on the Sandy Hook tragedy is still months away. Adding that no additional information about their investigation is ready to be released.
