OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WWLP) - Residents of the coastal community of Chalker Beach in Old Saybrook, Connecticut are beginning the work of rebuilding.

After feeling damage from Tropical Storm Irene, a year later Hurricane Sandy has brought the worst of the ocean that neighbors in this town usually love to be near.

Many homes right along the water have received significant damage. Some homes have had the back side of them completely ripped away; revealing the inside of the home, including the stairwell.

The homes that received the least amount of damage did better because they were raised from the ground, allowing the water, waves and sand to go underneath the majority of the home, leaving most of the structure intact.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands along the Connecticut shoreline and farther inland remain without power.
