SUFFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) - A Suffield police officer has been fired, police confirm, after he was charged with tampering with evidence.

Jeremy DePietro was arrested on Friday, May 11 after a lengthy investigation into the disappearance of evidence from a 2011 drug bust.

On March 3, 2011 police responded to a medical call on Mountain Road. Once inside the apartment, officers found illegal narcotics and $332 in cash. DePietro was the arresting officer.

The evidence from the bust was placed in a temporary evidence room. The court later ruled the narcotics be destroyed and the money placed in the court's general fund. That's when a detective determined some of the cash was missing and an internal investigation was launched.

DePietro was charged with tampering with evidence and sixth degree larceny. He was fired following a police commission meeting into the situation.

According to police, DePietro was an officer at the Suffield Police Department for over six years, and before that he was an officer in Bridgeport.

DePietro was released after posting a $24,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, May 22.
