UConn coach: Players didn't fight

Howard's mother visited players on Monday

STORRS, Conn. (AP) - University of Connecticut coach Randy Edsall says he's heard nothing to indicate members of his team were involved in a fight before player Jasper Howard was killed.

Speaking at his weekly pre-game news conference Tuesday, Edsall said there may have been some "verbal jostling" but he has not been told that any of his players were fighting with anyone.

Police say Howard was stabbed to death, and another player suffered minor injuries, during an altercation following a dance early Sunday morning. A Hartford attorney says his client, who expects to be arrested, was fighting with several football players before the stabbing.

Edsall says Howard's mother visited with each player Monday, and his uncle, a former Miami police officer, advised them not to seek revenge.

Edsall says UConn will wear a sticker with Howard's initials on its helmets for the rest of the season and will carry his helmet or jersey to away games. Funeral services are tentatively set for Monday in Florida and Edsall says the team will attend.
