CPSC warning people of holiday hazards

Dozens die every year associated with decoration

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - It's holiday decorating time again, a family tradition that can end in tragedy if you aren't careful.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says each November and December thousands of people are injured, dozens die and millions of dollars in property are lost as a result of falls, fires and other incidents associated with holiday decorations.

CPSC chairman, Inez Tenenbaum says consumers should especially beware of broken or counterfeit lights. “Check each set of lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed wires or loose connections. Throw out the damaged sets. Do not use damaged sets on your tree."

Tenebaum also reminds consumers to keep the Christmas tree stand filled with water and make sure that smoke detectors are working.
