PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) - Palmer’s fire chief says that a fire that destroyed a two-family home on Fox Street Thursday night was an accident.

Chief Alan Roy told 22News that a dropped oil lamp on the second floor started the fire at 27 Fox Street. Roy says that the flames from the dropped lamp ignited a blanket, which allowed it to spread through the house.

Fire crews from several neighboring communities were called in to help, and it took about two hours before the fire was finally under control.

The Pioneer Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the residents of the home find a place to stay.
