SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield firefighters were able to put out a fire at an unoccupied house on Allen Street at around 3:00 Friday morning.

Aide to the Fire Commissioner Dennis Leger told 22News that the fire started in a crawlspace above the kitchen at 1033 Allen Street. Firefighters had to pull down the ceiling.

Leger estimates the damage to the house at $50,000 dollars.

He says that an investigation determined that the fire started in wiring going to a kitchen exhaust fan.
