SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Police in Springfield are looking for a man and woman responsible for hijacking a man’s car at knifepoint, and driving him around the city so they could withdraw money with his ATM card.
Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that around 11:25 Sunday night, the victim, a 50 year-old man, was waiting for the light to change at the corner of Worthington and Dwight Streets, when a woman came up to his car, opened the passenger side door, and pulled out a knife. The woman got in and told the victim to drive to Park Street and Stockbridge Court, and to park the car there.
Once there, Delaney says, a middle-aged man came to the car, pulled out a knife, and told the victim to move over. The victim sat between the man and woman as the man drove down to Sumner Avenue to force the victim to withdraw money from different ATM’s. The first two times, the victim could not withdraw money, but was successful in getting $600 during a third try at the People’s Bank ATM at Sumner Avenue and Allen Street.
The man then drove the car back west down Sumner Avenue to the corner of Fort Pleasant Avenue, where the two took the victim’s bank card and cell phone, exited the car, and ran away.
The male suspect is described as a black man in his mid 40’s. He was wearing a black coat and a gray hat at the time of the robbery. The female suspect is described as being in her early 40’s, about 5’7” tall, with black hair. She was wearing a black coat and skirt and carrying a red purse.
Police have released surveillance photos of the male robbery suspect, which were taken at the People’s Bank ATM. If you have any information, you are asked to call Springfield Police Detectives at (413) 787-6355 or you can anonymously text-a-tip.
