Jenifer Thurston of Cheshire admits to embezzling from bank

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) -  A Cheshire woman has been sentenced to two years in jail after pleading guilty to embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from the bank where she worked.

Jennifer Thurston pleaded guilty Wednesday to embezzlement by a bank employee and larceny over $250.

Prosecutors say the 40-year-old Thurston was fired from the TD Bank branch in Pittsfield in 2009 after acknowledging taking $2,000 from her till. An audit by the bank revealed that she had stolen more than $110,000 before she was fired.

She and her lawyer said the amount was more like $70,000.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that her lawyer told the judge she did not use the money for "flashy cars" and luxuries, but rather for medical expenses during a difficult period for her family.

Thurston tearfully apologized.
