SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - A couple dangerous intersections in Southampton are now a little safer with the help of solar energy. A four way intersection in Southampton at Country Road and East Street is a little different, the stop signs light up!
These new stop signs, costing between $1,700 and $2,500 a piece, are powered by solar panels on top of the sign.
According to Southampton Police Chief David Silvernail, before the introduction of the new signs there were many accidents at this intersection because people weren't seeing the stop signs. The recent introduction of these solar powered illuminating signs at two intersections in Southampton has brought with it numerous benefits.
"They were great actually during the power outages and anything that's sustainable and isn't sucking off the grid is a good thing,” said Katherine Hall of Southampton.
Police Chief David Silvernail told 22News,"we've seen a dramatic increase in the safety at these intersections. Because it's flashing it brings attention to the stop sign and it's been a big improvement."
However, even with the lighted stop signs in place 22news cameras were rolling as numerous cars continued to roll by the stop sign without coming to a stop. Chief Silvernail told 22News they were working on installing more of these lighted stop signs around Southampton.
