EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The
Nashawannuck Pond in Easthampton will receive
major makeover this summer.
Mayor Michael Tautznik told 22News on Tuesday that
contractors will being dredging the man-made pond in August.
"Activities in the watershed have had a pretty negative impact on the water quality in the pond and on the depth of the water," Mayor Tautznik said.
The project will being by draining the pond. The US Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the removal of approximate 55,000 cubic yards of sediment. It will be relocated to Park Street and used as fill by the city.
The depth of the Nashawannuck Pond will range from 6 to 12 feet, adequate depth to discourage weed growth.
Residents, like Karin LaPointe, who have homes on the water are excited for the changes.
“It’s a beautiful area but you can’t swim in it. And it’s a resource that the town needs to appreciate and clean up.” LaPoint said. “Property values are going to go up. This is a resource that the whole town can use!”
Mayor Tautznik also hopes the Nashawannuck Pond Habitat Restoration Project will boost business in Easthampton. “The next focus is on the pond’s ability to be a driving force for the economy and community.”
US Army Corps of Engineers estimates project completion in nine months.
