What used to be a potato farm in Amherst, has transformed into a modern operation.
The Swartz Family Farm grows vegetables and herbs using water with dissolved plant nutrients. Notably not included on the list of growing supplies: soil!
Rows of plastic canals house plants until they reach full maturity. Produce is periodically fed the water/nutrient concoction throughout day.
“The nutrients are pumped in through drip tubes. And all the nutrients and water are concentrated right through the plant root zones, so there’s nothing that leaches anywhere, nothing that goes or flows away,” Joe Swartz explained to 22News on Monday. “All of the remaining water and nutrients flow into a catch channel which directs it back to the tank. We are constantly reusing and recycling everything.”
According to Swartz, who has been perfecting hydroponic growing techniques for more than 20 years, the method is more efficient than traditional farming.
“In this system we use approximately 1/10 of the amount of water that we would normally need. And we use approximately 1/6 of the amount of nutrients,” said Swartz.
Since all growing is done in a greenhouse, Swartz is not at the mercy of Mother Nature. The growing season will not cease when the harsh New England winter rolls into town.
Although Swartz runs a pesticide-free operation, produce is not considered “organic” because it is not grown in soil.
“People are concerned about pesticide use, […] transportation costs… Things like that. So it’ really, really important to focus on knowing where your food comes from, and supporting local agriculture and farms whenever you can,” Swartz said when asked what he wanted the public to remember about his story.
Local residents can create an account with Swartz Family Farm . Each week, consumers select produce for pick up at 11 Meadow Street. The fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits are from the Swartz Family Farm and other local growers.
