Sec. of State to oversee E.L. election

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) - Secretary of State William Galvin's office will be overseeing the election in East Longmeadow on primary day, September 6th, and possibly on election day in November.

This after allegations of voting fraud surfaced in the town.

Galvin was in Springfield Wednesday touring a facility under construction when he addressed the issue.

There were allegedly attempts to change the party affiliation of hundreds of East Longmeadow residents.

Galvin says he knows someone in the town clerks office helped commit the alleged fraud, however he says he knows it was not the clerk himself.

"This is a very disturbing situation. I have had a substantial amount of experience running elections but I cannot recall a single instance where I saw such a brazen effort to steal the rights or the identities of voters to change their party enrollment and steal their ballots. I think this is a very serious matter," Galvin said.

Galvin wants voters to know their rights will not be compromised.

His office sent out a letter to residents affected to let them know about the investigation.
