(WWLP) - Before you cash your next check you better make sure it isn't
fraudulent.
The 22News I-Team uncovers what can happen when you deposit a
bad check.
Amanda Lopez became an Avon representative more than six months ago when she was laid off from her Summer job.
Lopez enjoyed selling Avon products through the catalog and on her Avon webpage, that was until her biggest order came in.
Amanda Lopez said, "It was a huge order. It was for a large company called Immucor Inc. in Georgia."
When Lopez received the check she noticed, the company overpaid
her and then they asked her to send back the difference to an
address other than Immucor.
Amanda Lopez said, "I talked with the branch manager because
I had a hint it might be. So he told me to call sun trust banks
which is also in Georgia. I gave them the number on the check and
they said it had sufficient funds and said it would be ok."
Lopez deposited the check and the next thing she knew Bank of America closed all of her accounts and charged a fee for having to investigate the bad check.
The account had sufficient funds, because it is a legitimate company in Georgia. Immucor's Rick Gilland told the 22News I-Team that other Avon representatives have contacted them after they received orders from this medical company.
Gilland told us that someone must have copied one of their checkst and is running a check scam.
Bank of America's Anne Pace told 22News, "We encourage our customers to know who they are doing business with and not to accept checks from unknown parties....The account will be closed if a check is returned in the first six months."
