SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Governor recently cut another 750 state jobs and ordered furloughs for 5,000 employees, but we found plenty of city workers taking home big bucks.
The 22News I-Team takes a look at the payrolls to find out who's making what in your city.
MAYOR
FIRE CHIEF
POLICE CHIEF
SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT
Like you, Local Cities have to live on less. Taxes and Beacon Hill Bucks are down, but city halls are still cutting hefty checks to city workers.
The I-Team found out what eight communities pay their police and fire chiefs, Mayors and School Superintendents.
The public servants making the least are Mayors. Coming in at the bottom, the Mayor of Greenfield grosses seventy grand a year. The top paid Mayor on our list, Springfield's Mayor Sarno gets $95,000.
Springfield Fire Commissioner Gary Cassanelli is the top earner on our list with a salary just under $144,000.
In the cop category, Westfield comes in a close second right behind Holyoke, with its Chief earning nearly $130,000 a year.
The men and women running these public schools all make six-figure salaries. Greenfield once again is at the bottom of the list. No one comes close to Springfield's Superintendent, Dr. Alan Ingram, earning 190-thousand dollars a year.
While mayors may not be top earners within a municipal budget one local mayor told 22News there is a reason someone like the Superintendent of Schools gets paid so well.
Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonnette said, "I think there is a tough market to attract top flight superintendents and that is why the salaries are so competitive. Educational requirements are often more than what would be for a lower admission position."
Tina Taylor of Springfield was surprised to hear 117 Chicopee
city workers make more than the Mayor.
Taylor said, "Because the Mayor runs the city and although
the Superintendent runs the schools I just figured the
superintendent would be under the Mayor."
And payroll check has just begun. Stay with 22News to learn more about how much money government workers bring home.
