(NBCNC) - A new pope has been elected.
As white smoke poured from the roof top of the Sistine Chapel Wednesday evening the faithful who filled St. Peter's Square erupted in celebration.
After a day and a half of discussion, meditation and prayer the 115 voting cardinals reached agreement on the man they believe should lead their faith.
About an hour after the smoke first appeared French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran walked to the balcony and announced "Habmeus papam", or "We have a Pope".
Minutes later Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis I, greeted the world.
Francis I is a fitting name.
He is the first Latin American Pope and first Jesuit to serve.
