Homeless flock to shelters to keep warm

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Spending a night outdoors in bitter cold temperatures could literally kill you.

The Executive Director of the 'Friends of the Homeless' told 22News between the tough economy, and the freezing cold weather, the Worthington Street Shelter took in165 people on Monday night and had about 100 people take refuge inside on Tuesday afternoon.

Bill Miller is the Executive Director of Friends for the Homeless. He said it's a tough time of year not only for donations, but also for the mental health of those who rely on the warm accommodations and meals.

"Well, it's very tough, both for the cold itself and then emotionally, I mean if you think about people during the holiday season have to be in a place like this, it's not ideal and again, that's why people who send their support through food donations."
